A shipping container home is just what it sounds like. A home made from shipping containers. And while it might sound a little funny, truth be told they are becoming more and more popular.
The average shipping container is made of weathered steel. It will be about 8 feet wide and 8 feet tall. A shipping container can be purchased in either 20 feet or 40 feet.
A shipping container house will consist of either one container or many containers. The containers can be stacked and put together to make a very stylish and affordable home.
Finding Shipping Containers
The great thing about shipping containers is that they aren’t hard to find. If you live in a coastal area such as Los Angeles or Houston, you can check around at the local ports for unused containers.
Even if you live in a rural area there is a good chance you will find containers laying around. Prices will vary depending on the quality of the container. But for the most part you will find them for anywhere between $1000 to $2000.
And since they are already made to be transported, having them delivered should be no problem at all. You can pay a shipping company $2 a mile to have the containers hauled.
Building a Container Home
Build a home from shipping containers is really no different than building a traditional home.
The one big difference is that you will be using a metal structure and not bricks and wood.
To transform the structure into a suitable home you will need tools such as welders, cutters, and grinders.
To keep your container dry and off the ground you should place it on a concrete slab. Make sure you have all plumbing in place before you put the container in its place.
When it comes to designing the interior of your container home you can do it the exact same way you would in a traditional home.
